my beautiful helly, you're too dear for that world

I don’t have much to say about this episode because, honestly, the last two completely drained any excitement I had left for the show. So many of the characters seem to have lost their depth, and while their motives were finally explained—which I suppose I shouldn’t complain about—it took away the sense of mystery that originally made the story so compelling. Not knowing what the company was really about was part of what kept me invested, and now that so much has been revealed, a lot of the intrigue feels lost. I can understand why the last episode was rated so poorly though audiences were expecting twists and real development, and while my feelings toward it have softened a little in hindsight, watching it the first time was pure agony. One of my favourite things about the show was always Cobel and her almost perfect, composed style, so seeing her dishevelled in the last episode took away some of that magic [even if, in a strange way, I’ve found myself liking her more now] I do think however my likeness for her comes from the fact that there's worse beings at play here and knowing that she was exploited as a child and became a product of her environment gives her grace.. also just seeing glimpses of James Eagen it gave the story a more grounded threat, which I think the show really needed; the company is so grand and large and even destroyed a town yet they were completely oblivious to what was happening with Mark which made no sense at all to me? I also liked the reveal of Burt’s true role and how he saved Irving, and the clarity on why Cobel ran away when Helena asked her to get in the car. Devon, however, continues to feel jarring, she seems less like a real person and more like a device to move the plot forward but we'll just have to see... I feel a little sad knowing we only have the finale left, 72 minutes feels fair, but part of me wishes there was more space to sit with these characters, I wish I had the silence in my brain to really talk about how this production team approached identity, It’s why I’ve always been so drawn to this show but maybe i'll rant about it another day.
